Some basic information about the support group
The Gloucestershire Eating Disorder Association Support Group is part of a network of support groups all over the country co-ordinated by the Eating Disorders Association (a national self-help organisation). It is an open access drop-in group which means that people can refer themselves and do not have to commit themselves to coming on a regular basis.
The aim of the group is to offer low key support and information in a setting where participants understand the problems experienced by people with eating disorders and their carers. It is designed to be an adjunct to professional counselling and support or a first step towards getting professional help.
The facilitators are people who have had personal experience of eating disorders, either themselves or as carers.
The group does not offer treatment for eating disorders, but encourages participants to share their thoughts and feelings to take responsibility for their own recovery.
Information is seen as an important aspect of this process, so the group facilitators give hand outs about the Eating Disorders Association and local resources available for treatment.
